₿ Bitcoin Halving Explained
Price Impact & Investment Strategy
Bitcoin Halving is an event built into Bitcoin's code that cuts the mining reward in half approximately every four years (every 210,000 blocks). Designed by Satoshi Nakamoto, it's the core supply mechanism driving Bitcoin toward its 21 million coin limit.
Why Does the Halving Matter?
It comes down to basic economics: supply and demand. When supply decreases but demand holds steady or increases, upward price pressure follows.
Before 2020: 12.5 BTC per block → 1,800 BTC/day
2020–2024: 6.25 BTC → 900 BTC/day
Post-2024: 3.125 BTC → 450 BTC/day
Each halving cuts new supply — creating persistent upward price pressure if demand is maintained.
Historical Halving Price Impact
| Halving | Date | BTC Price Before | 1-Year Peak | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | November 2012 | $12 | $1,000+ | +8,000%+ |
| 2nd | July 2016 | $650 | $20,000 | +2,900% |
| 3rd | May 2020 | $8,700 | $65,000 | +650% |
| 4th | April 2024 | $64,000 | $100,000+ | +50%+ |
Historically, Bitcoin has set new all-time highs within 12–18 months of each halving. That said, past performance does not guarantee future results.
The 2024 Fourth Halving
On April 19, 2024, the block reward dropped from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC. Simultaneously, the January 2024 approval of US spot Bitcoin ETFs (BlackRock, Fidelity) drove unprecedented institutional demand. BTC broke $100,000 by late 2024, marking a new all-time high. The fourth halving is unique in combining supply reduction with ETF-driven institutional inflow.
Halving Investment Risks
① No guaranteed "halving = pump" formula: Macroeconomic factors (interest rates, USD strength), regulation, and sentiment all influence outcomes.
② Already priced in: Since halvings are scheduled and public knowledge, markets often price in the event months in advance.
③ Short-term correction risk: The classic "buy the rumor, sell the news" pattern has seen BTC drop immediately post-halving before resuming upward trends.
